A socially fair transition towards a carbon-neutral European Union by 2050 is one of the main objectives of the European Green Deal. This is even more important in the current context of high energy prices. It means, among other things, tackling inequality and energy poverty through structural measures. The launch event of the Energy Poverty Advice Portal , which will take place online from 22 to 23 November 2021, will bring together EU stakeholders, national and local, to discuss how EU policies and the EPAH step up efforts to reduce energy poverty , especially as the transition commitments are only reinforced by the Fit for 55 Package and because the current environment of high prices requires special attention to the needs of poor and vulnerable energy consumers.

Tackling energy poverty is an important part of a successful energy transition and vice versa. While social policy should play a strong role where energy poverty is a reflection of general poverty, measures aimed at achieving energy targets, such as increased efficiency through housing renovation, can go a long way in addressing the structural causes of energy poverty.
The Commission has long supported the idea of municipalities taking the lead in advancing a just transition with targeted actions and leading by example. As the EU’s leading initiative on local action to tackle energy poverty, the Energy Poverty Advice Portal (EPAH) will be the ideal place for local authorities and practitioners looking for a wide range of solutions to reduce energy poverty. It will provide direct support and a wide range of online tools, based on research results and experience gathered on the ground. The portal aims to optimise an action-based approach, tailored to the diverse needs of municipalities across Europe.
Through high-level presentations, interactive discussions and workshops, the event will create an environment conducive to sharing good practices that identify opportunities and challenges perceived from different levels of governance.
