An opportunity to gain key learnings on the use of Participatory Video projects to address Climate Change and amplify the voices of those affected by it

The conference was an opportunity to gain knowledge and experiences from members of Climatubers who have been at the forefront of implementing Participatory Video as an innovative tool to address climate change education, foster climate action, and promote social inclusion.

The Climatubers project, funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, has organised a conference on innovative methodologies for climate education and action through Participatory Video. The conference took place on 24 November at 9.45am at the Espai Jove Fontana in Barcelona, with 25 in-person and 16 online attendees. Attendees included social and environmental workers from local administrations, participatory video professionals, representatives of NGOs and other associations and teachers.

A series of case studies accompanied by a screening of the Participatory Videos were presented, along with a series of presentations that allowed for a deeper understanding of the lessons learned and policy recommendations drawn from the experiences of Climatubers. There was a specific focus on exploring the impact of the participatory video approach on the inclusion and amplification of the voices of local communities.

This was followed by a panel discussion with experts and decision-makers that welcomed questions from the audience, and discussed the opportunities and challenges of using Participatory Video. The panel discussion was an opportunity to bring together decision-makers, experts, practitioners and the public to share their experiences and learnings, as well as to explore the transformative potential of Participatory Video to address climate change, promote sustainability and foster social inclusion.

This was followed by a working session, organized to jointly identify and overcome the challenges of implementing the Participatory Video methodology. Two sessions took place in parallel: one group discussed decision-making and how to better interconnect climate change policies and social policies to enable climate mitigation and adaptation among vulnerable communities, while the other group worked on how to implement Participatory Video for climate action. Finally, both groups shared their ideas.

The need for decision-makers to create spaces that foster empowerment, vulnerable communities’ perception of lack of legitimacy, apathy towards climate change, the involvement of facilitators in training and involvement with their community, the lack of resources on the part of educational centers where some of the challenges identified during the roundtable and working session.

In essence, the event offered a unique opportunity for professionals, educators, activists, and anyone interested in climate action to learn, engage, and connect in the field of Participatory Video.
