The SDG Striker magazine: “Sport for Sustainability” is a collaborative effort by the participants of the Erasmus+ SDG Striker project, which aims to promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the football and sports sectors. The magazine aims to inform and encourage clubs, leaders and the football community to make changes and take action in favour of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals.
This second edition focuses on the best measures being implemented in some clubs and training centers in Europe and that can serve as examples or reference points for other sports entities to follow. Some examples are: the use of renewable energies, water and energy saving measures, more efficient waste management, training in the field of sustainability, more ecological alternatives to clothing made with plastics and artificial turf or the promotion of the use of public and shared transport.
It also proposes guidelines and tools for football entities to improve their sustainability indicators. One of them is the European Green Coach project, which allows football clubs to register on a platform that calculates their ecological footprint, offers information on how to improve it and rewards their good sustainable performance with a seal that certifies their reduced ecological footprint.
Furthermore, since transport is one of the areas that involves the greatest environmental impact, the magazine includes the best measures to remedy it, along with opinions from different participants in the world of football, from managers to players.
Finally, advice is provided on how to include the community in the club’s decisions regarding changes in sustainability and on the importance that this can have in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals and in improving, both in quality and efficiency, the performance of the sports entity.
