Energy poverty is usually associated with heating and winter, but it is equally important during summer. Up to 19% of households in the European Union claimed that, during the months of summer, they were not able to maintain a healthy temperature.
Therefore, this is an issue of great importance, especially considering the increasing number of heat waves affecting the citizens of the EU. In this context, H2020 COOLTORISE, a project financed with European funds, wants to create a framework on energy poverty during summer in order to come up with common solutions. It aims to try and test measures to reduce the impact of heat waves in homes with low energy efficiency and provide tools and information for them and any other interested entity. This way, this project seeks to guarantee that many families can still live in good conditions even during summer.
Ecoserveis participation
Cooltorise has several pilot projects in Italy, Bulgaria and Spain. Ecoserveis coordinates WP1 and also participates in the project by coordinating the pilots in Barcelona, L’Hospitalet and Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
Goals
Energy poverty has traditionally been associated with households’ inability to meet their heating needs during the winter. However, up to 19% of households reported feeling uncomfortable and being unable to maintain a healthy temperature during the summer. Nine of the ten hottest years on record have occurred since 2005, and the last five years have been the five hottest since records began. Climate change is increasing both the severity and frequency of extreme heat waves and, in densely populated urban areas, these heat-wave events will combine with the urban heat island (UHI) effect, worsening temperatures in urban centres. Therefore, cooling needs and the risk of overheating must be incorporated into the energy poverty equation.
A continuació es presenten els principals objectius específics
- Reduce exposure to heat among the most vulnerable households by improving indoor thermal conditions, which is expected to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
- Increase summer energy literacy and thereby improve the energy devices installed in households in order to prevent climate change and reduce future emissions.
