Next Wednesday, 17 March at 11:00 a.m., the final report of the Mobilitat Justa project will be presented. The project has placed women from Barcelona’s peripheral and hillside neighbourhoods at the centre of the process, involving them in assessing mobility inequalities and defining proposals to improve mobility as a strategy for tackling inequalities in the city.

The project, coordinated by Ecoserveis and co-funded by Barcelona City Council through its 2020 general call for grants to organisations, has highlighted how the participation of people who are usually outside the media spotlight creates an opportunity to design and implement more effective and democratic public policies.

This initiative has tested a people-centred participatory methodology developed from neighbourhoods and the margins, focused on

the people, with the aim of defining a working model that can be adapted to the realities of different municipalities and that incorporates the voices of local residents and community organisations into the design of fairer and more sustainable mobility policies.

Users and experts

Women’s experiences as mobility users and experts were the starting point for the study, enabling a first-hand assessment of existing mobility inequalities in the neighbourhoods of La Marina, El Carmel, Besòs and Roquetes. Their perspectives were combined with the experiences and recommendations of women working professionally in the mobility sector, collected in the Mobilitat Justa podcast series, available on Spotify and Ivoox.

Thanks to the active involvement of neighbourhood organisations such as the Centre Cívic Torre La Sagrera, the Associació de Veïns i Veïnes de la Sagrera, the Taula de Dones de la Marina, Carmel Amunt, El Tinglado, Associació Ambar Prim and Som del Barri, debates and spaces for reflection and co-creation were launched with the aim of expanding them and consolidating spaces for continuous learning, empowerment, participation and decision-making.

The study analysed aspects such as the most frequently used modes of transport, the main reasons for travelling, perceptions of safety, accessibility, and priorities for accessing different public spaces, among others. Based on all the contributions received, a series of recommendations was compiled and a broader debate was opened on the need for a new, more sustainable mobility model, one that goes beyond the environmental dimension and takes into account the groups and territories that are often left behind in this transition: a fair mobility model.

Presentation of the report

Gaia D’Elia, a member of the Ecoserveis team, will present the report together with representatives from Carmel Amunt and the Taula de Dones de la Marina, neighbourhood organisations that have participated in the project. The event will also feature Janet Sanz, Barcelona’s Deputy Mayor for Ecology, Urban Planning, Infrastructure and Mobility.
